Cribbs sits out practice

In news that will come as a surprise to few who are familiar with Joshua Cribbs, the Browns' jack of all trades is hopeful that he'll play Sunday in Detroit.

Cribbs didn't practice Wednesday. He suffered what's being called a neck injury on the final play of Monday night's game and spent the night in the hospital for precautionary testing.

In typical Cribbs fashion, though, he was back at the Browns' facility just a few hours after being released Tuesday, and he was back with his teammates on Wednesday.

"I was just hoping it wasn't too serious that I'd have to miss a game or anything like that," Cribbs said of the hit he took from Dwan Edwards of the Ravens. "It took a little bit for the pain to subside and when it finally did, I wanted to get up, but (the doctors) wouldn't letme. They said it was precautionary.

"(Playing this week), that's not for me to decide. I want to, but it might come up different for the staff here. We'll see what the doctors say."

Cribbs said he heard from Edwards and several other Ravens players Tuesday, all of whom wished him well and assured him no harm was intended.

"I pitched the ball off and then I kind of just stopped; I was about to go and try to get a pitch back from (Robert Royal) again," Cribbs said. "But I kind of relaxed a little bit and was defenseless. That's why he got a good hit on me.

"I told him I didn't think he owed me an apology. It's football. Those things happen."

INJURY REPORT: Joining Cribbs in sitting out practice Wednesday were Lawrence Vickers, John St. Clair, Steve Heiden and Dave Zastudil. Browns Head Coach Eric Mangini said Zastudil likely wouldn't play this week.

Limited participants in Wednesday's practice were Shaun Rogers, Jamal Lewis, Rex Hadnot, Chansi Stuckey, David Bowens and Kenyon Coleman.

‘OL HENRY: Lions Coach Jim Schwartz said former Brown Anthony Henry figures to play a significant role in the Lions' secondary in Sunday's game.

"Anthony is a veteran player who's really smart," Schwartz said. "He makes plays on the ball. He had a few games he didn't play his best and he'd be the first person to say that.

"But this week I think you'll see him on the field in a lot of different roles. We have some injuries and he may have to play a lot of different roles for us. He can do it. He's a great guy, he's a pro."

Henry had 10 interceptions as a Browns rookie in 2001 and played with the Browns through 2004. He was traded by Dallas to the Lions in the spring.

QUICK HITS -- The Browns signed wide receiver James Robinson to the practice squad and released wide receiver Chris Williams from the practice squad...Mangini had praise for the play of inside linebackers Kaluka Maiava and Bowens. "Kaluka did a really nice job this week in a significant role. Kaluka hadn't had that type of play time and Bowens hadn't played that much inside, hadn't been the play caller"...The Ravens released kicker Steven Hauscka and signed Billy Cundiff, who kicked for the Browns earlier this season when Phil Dawson was injured.
