After one game, Clifton Smith's NFL Europa career is looking pretty solid.
The Cologne Centurions linebacker and member of the Browns managed 4 tackles and 2 pass breakups during his team's 24-18 winning effort on the road against the Hamburg Sea Devils over the weekend, but it was his third-quarter interception of a Casey Bramlet pass and the ensuing 37-yard return that was his biggest impact on the game.
The return gave the Centurions the ball at the Hamburg 12 yard line and led to a 23-yard Nick Novak field goal that gave the visitors a 17-6 lead.
Browns running back Chris Barclay, meanwhile, started for the Beriln Thunder, rushing for 48 yard on 9 carries (5.3 avg.) during the team's 15-3 win over the Rhein Fire. His first carry of the NFL Europa season went for 9 yards and gave the Thunder a first down on a second-and-6 play. During the fourth quarter, he marked a 14-yard run on a second-and-14 play to give his team a first down.
He also caught 4 passes for 9 yards and returned two kickoffs for 39 yards.
Browns and Frankfurt Galaxy punter Kyle Baslerpunted just once during the Galaxy's 30-14 win over the Amsterdam Admirals. He boomed the first-quarter punt 53 yards. Browns defensive tackle Alvin Smith, meanwhile, started at defensive tackle for the Admirals.
Week Two of NFL Europa action will kick off Friday when the Rhein Fire takes on Amsterdam to battle for their first win of the season. Frankfurt will take on Cologne Saturday in a battle of unbeaten teams, while Berlin will host Hamburg Sunday.
