Seven players, including three starters, missed practice Wednesday for the Browns.
Right tackle Kevin Shaffer (knee), and defensive ends Robaire Smith (neck) and Orpheus Roye (knee) sat out practice, along with defensive end Simon Fraser (illness), tight end Steve Heiden (ankle), linebacker David McMillan (knee) and linebacker Antwan Peek (knee).
Roye missed Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
Crennel said the larger number of players missing practice early in the week is a sign of the physical toll the NFL season takes on players. He said the team is trying its best to get players ready for game day Sunday against the Jets.
Some good news for the Browns was the return of cornerback Eric Wright and nose tackle Ethan Kelley to practice. Both players missed the past two games with respective knee injuries.
"Today I'll get a chance to run around a little bit," Wright said before practice. "I'm just trying to see how I feel today and take it from there."
For the Jets, only one player -- receiver Jerricho Cotchery (finger) -- sat out practice, while four were limited.
