Crennel earns Coach of the Week honors

Steve King, Staff Writer

The Browns players put forth their best performance of the year on Monday night.

So, too, did the coaches - and one coach in particular, Romeo Crennel.

The fourth-year Browns head coach was announced Friday as the Motorola NFL Coach of the Week for week 6 after his team dominated the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants 35-14.

Voting was done on NFL.com. Crennel was picked from among three finalists, the other two being Jim Haslett of the St. Louis Rams and Gary Kubiak of the Houston Texans. Haslett's team last Sunday pulled off a 19-17 upset of the Washington Redskins, who host the Browns this Sunday at FedExField.

The victory over the Giants did a lot to rejuvenate the Browns, who won their second straight to improve to 2-3.

Interestingly enough, Crennel is the third former Browns assistant coach from the 2000 season to win the Motorola honor this year.

The Dallas Cowboys' Tony Sparano, who was on the Cleveland staff with Crennel that year and also coached here in 1999, earned the award in week 3. And the Pittsburgh Steelers' Mike Tomlin, who spent a portion of training camp in 2000 with the Browns as part of the NFL's minority coaching internship program, won it last week.
