Elam giving back, looking ahead

Zac Jackson, Staff Writer

Abram Elam isn't afraid to talk about some of the worst stories that have come out of his hometown.

And that's also why Elam wants do something to create a positive story in Riviera Beach, Fla. Saturday, Elam's T.E.A.M. Foundation (Together Everyone Achieves More) will host the second annual "Day in the Park" at the Dan Calloway Amphitheater.

The event's purpose is to promote a sense of pride, unity and peace in a place Elam has seen too much violence.

"This is something that means a lot to me and I hope it means more to Riviera Beach," Elam said. "It's a crime-riddled place that gets a lot of exposure for negative things. I want to do something positive.

"It's my hometown. I love it. And it's important that I do whatever I can to give back and hopefully make a difference for some kids."

Elam will have help in trying to make that difference. More than 10 NFL players are scheduled to attend and lend a hand, including three of Elam's Browns teammates: C.J. Mosley, Santonio Thomas and Hank Poteat.

"Those guys being there means a lot to me but I think it will mean more to the kids," Elam said. "We all need positive role models. Kids need to see that if you work hard and stay off the streets, you can make it. Not just in football but in life.

"I grew up there. It wasn't always great. But dreams can come true if you work hard enough."

The day will be filled with food, giveaways, live music and activities for all ages. Guests will have an opportunity to interact with Elam and his NFL friends.

Other players scheduled to attend include: Brandon Flowers (Kansas City Chiefs), Leon Washington (New York Jets), Heath Evans (New Orleans Saints), DaJuan Morgan (Kansas City Chiefs), David Clowney (New York Jets), Tucker Frederickson (former New York Giants), Kareem Brown (New York Jets), Anthony Carter (former Minnesota Vikings), Drew Coleman (New York Jets), Barrett Green (former Detroit Lions/New York Giants/Houston Texans), Ahmad Carroll (New York Jets) and Usama Young (New Orleans Saints).
